5 million Americans are ‘long term’ unemployed — and government only puts off the problem

It is the sixth time in nearly two years that they’ve expanded or extended unemployment benefits — putting off, again, a day of reckoning our political leaders seem unwilling to face.
With the national unemployment rate at 9.9% — and 9.8% here in New York City — officials are afraid of what will happen to our cities, our welfare rolls and our struggling economy if these long-term unemployed are no longer given government assistance.

More Americans Unexpectedly File Claims for Jobless Benefits

Interesting how the numbers are always unexpected.
Oddly enough, there are a few good opportunities to start a small business in this economy. For example, the newly enacted Health Care reform law, instantly created 30 million new patients. May 20 (Bloomberg) -- More Americans unexpectedly filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, showing firings remain elevated even as employment climbs.
Initial jobless claims rose by 25,000 to 471,000 in the week ended May 15, exceeding the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News and the highest level in a month, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The number of people receiving unemployment insurance and those getting extended payments fell.
